Biomaterials technology

The Laboratory of Biomaterial Technology (LBAT) was established in September 2, 2009 upon the legacy of the Laboratory of Bioactives Compound from Microorganisms (BCM). Currently, the research focuses of LBT include exploiting the potential of microorganisms and biomass resources to generate the biomaterial, bio-fuel and bio-nano materials.

The main achievements

The microbial product Micromix with high activity of cellulose degradation was applied to the treatment of solid wastes in Lai xa village (Ha Tay province) and Lam town (Nam Dinh province). Vixura product was applied successfully to treatment of 75 ha and 30 ha rice straw to make fertilizer in 5 districts of Nam Dinh province and in Gia Binh district of Bac Ninh province respectively. The use of our microbial products has assisted to improved quality and yield (10%) of vegetables in the areas specialized for vegetable cultivation.
Fermentation technology (100 l) and downstream process for nisin production was successfully established. Nisin product which displays new characteristic to inhibit Gram negative bacteria has been shown to be tantamount to the product of Sigma Company (14.000 Ul/mg).
Based on research into microbial data in the area of mountain in North of Vietnam, addenda of hill and mound land systematic was presented. Product Lypomycin M, which produced by using of yeast Lypomyces was increased 12-16% moisture and improved physicochemical characteristics of hill and mound land. (Studying of microbial diversity isolated from various ecosystems in Vietnam (deep sea, host-spring...), collection of microorganisms which can be use as producers of useful kinds of bioactive compounds such as: Astaxantine, thermostable enzymes, etc. were retrieved. BCM has developed process to produce lactic bacterial preservative substance which can be used for fish treatment. This way of treatment for fish residues not only contributes to prevention of environmental pollution caused by aquatic products waste but also helps improve fish quality compared with traditional salting preservation.
Two strains HN11 and HN34 were produced the high yield more than 80% L(+)-lactic acid on MRS medium contained 15 g/l of glucose. L(+)-lactic acid produced by fermentation of these strains was purified and used for synthesizing poly(+)-lactic acid which can be subsequently used as material to produce bio-degradable wrapping. This achievement contributes to increasing the use of the L(+) form in commercial production which was less possible than the use of D(-) form until recently, especially in Vietnam.
Using molecular methods to study Helicobacter pylori caused stomach diseases in Vietnamese patients who prone to cancer. The molecular detection kit was presented.
